In its first year the Hall & Woodhouse DLF Prize for local writers attracted 53 entries. The books were extraordinarily diverse in fields of fiction and non fiction. We are now delighted to announce the long list of seven books:

The Unfortunate Captain Pierce – Philip Browne

Secret of the Song – Cathie Hartigan

Wolf Wind  - Jane Wade Scarlet

The Postman Poet – Liz Shakespeare

That Still and Whispering Place – Kathy Shuker

Requiem for Private Hughes – Chip Tolson

The Ordinarily Extraordinary Life of Briony – Purbeck Wintour

Fiction and non fiction are represented and the subjects include local maritime history; a comic account of entanglements in contemporary family life; pioneering adventures in nineteenth century America; a mysterious drama linking past and present through music; social inequality through the life of a local poet; a tragic story of a child’s disappearance set in Cornwall; and a celebration of the life of a lost serviceman

From these our judges will select a short list of three finalists which will be announced in mid June. The winner will be announced on 12th July 2018 at an award ceremony at the Duchess of Cornwall, Poundbury. The guest of honour will be Kate Adie who will interview each of the three finalists before inviting them to read a short extract from their book. Kate will then reveal the winner and present the £1000 prize.

Feedback From 2017 Festival

William and I had a very interesting and often hilarious time putting (our presentation) together – fortunately we both wanted to be thoroughly prepared, so we refined and refined… we enjoyed ourselves, aided and abetted by the helpfulness of you and yours behind the scenes, the warmth of the audience, and the pleasantness of the setting. Speaking at your festival was an altogether happy experience. I only wish I had managed to organise listening to many of the other talks, which I really wanted to do… Many congratulations to you and all your team, and all wishes for Festival no. 3!
